Four shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at the jeep stand area of Khowai on Sunday early morning, a fire official said.

According to a fire official from Kalyanpur Fire Station, they received a call early in the morning, from a pedestrian who had spotted the fire early morning on Sunday. Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, the fire official said.

No one was injured in the incident as the fire broke out in the early hours when the shops remained closed. The four shops which were gutted in the fire are one vegetable shop, one engine oil shop, one sweet shop and one hotel, the fire official added.

“It took about half an hour for the firefighters to douse the flames. Four shops were gutted and the initial damage was estimated at Rs 50 lakh,” the fire official told reporters.

A short-circuit might have triggered the fire, the fire officer said the exact cause of the blaze was being ascertained.
