Tripura Police on Friday night arrested two drug peddlers and seized 50 kilograms of cannabis (ganja) worth Rs 5 lakh at Khowai.

The police stated that they received a crucial tip-off regarding one vehicle standing in Chebri area, on the basis of the tip-off police personnel from Khowai police station rushed to the spot. They brought the vehicle along with the driver and co-driver to the Khowai police station.

During a meticulous search of the vehicle, police officials found 50 kilograms of cannabis (ganja) packed in several packets were kept hidden in three secret chambers inside the vehicle, said police.

After the preliminary investigation police found that the vehicle was a stolen vehicle and it was used by the two drug peddlers to smuggle cannabis (ganja) beyond Tripura’s border.

Moreover, the estimated value of the confiscated cannabis (ganja) in the illicit market amounts to approximately Rs 5 lakh.

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against the arrested drug peddlers.

However, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has called on Tripura to get rid of drugs. Police are seizing crores worth of heroin, brown sugar, cannabis (ganja) and arresting traffickers, but the real kingpins remain out of reach, which is why the state is not moving towards a drug-free state despite so many anti-drug campaigns.
