Along with the rest of the world, Tripura also celebrated International Day of World’s Indigenous People at Saheed Bhagat Singh youth hostel on Wednesday.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, Minister for youth Affairs & Sports, Social Welfare & Social Education and Labour Tinku Roy, Minister for Cooperation, Tribal Welfare (TRP & PTG), Welfare of Minorities Shukla Charan Noatia and Chairman of Maharani Tulslbati Devi Welfare Trust.  Bipin Deb Barma were present.

The Chief Minister also greeted the Janajati people on this day and said the government is committed for socio-economic development of Janajati section.

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is the day to ponder over the economic, social, cultural and linguistic development of the Janajati people of the nation.

Notably, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is observed every year on 9 August to generate awareness and to safeguard the rights of the world’s indigenous population. This Day also recognizes the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make for the environmental protection.

This year’s theme is: Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination.
