Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumder on Tuesday paid his tributes to Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar on his birth anniversary in a programme organized by the department of Information and Cultural Affairs at Drop Gate premises. Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumder paid floral tributes to the statue of Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.

Speaking on the occasion Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumder said that the social reformer will be remembered for his crusade against child marriage and polygamy, and his teachings will continue to inspire all.

The BJP-led Tripura government is working for overall development of the people of the state. Tripura has created a model of ‘good governance and protection of people’ under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of the state would have to carry forward the tradition, he added.

The Narendra Modi government scaled up various welfare schemes keeping the poor in focus and expedited their implementation. The Modi government scaled up schemes and enhanced speed to achieve targets so that they reached the last person in society, he added.

Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born on September 26, 1820 in Veer Singh village of Medinipur district of Bengal. Ishwar Chandra was honoured with the title of Vidyasagar because of his erudition in Sanskrit and philosophy. He is called the patron of the downtrodden and the poor. Due to his efforts, the law for widow marriage was passed in the year 1856. While raising his voice to educate daughters, he also opposed child marriage. Vidyasagar passed away on 29 July 1891.
