The International Mother Language Day was observed in Tripura on Wednesday with colourful processions, functions and other events.
The state-level programme will be jointly organized by the Education department and the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh at Agartala Town Hall. A colourful procession or rally will start from in front of Agartala Town Hall at 7 am on February 21. Students and teachers of various schools and colleges and officials and staff of the Education Department and other departments will participate in this procession. Officials and staff of Bangladesh Assistant High Commission will also join this procession. Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha will be present as the chief guest in this event.
International Mother Language Day, first proclaimed by UNESCO and later adopted by the UN General Assembly, underscores the role of languages in promoting inclusion and achieving Sustainable Development Goals. Multilingual education policies, highlighted in the 2024 theme “Multilingual education – a pillar of learning and intergenerational learning”, are crucial for inclusive education and the preservation of indigenous languages. By starting education in the learner’s mother tongue and gradually introducing other languages, barriers between home and school are bridged, facilitating effective learning.
