Five militants of the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) Bishwamohan (BM) faction surrendered themselves before police in Tripura’s Dhalai district. The surrender took place on Friday evening.
The surrendered extremists have been identified as Kanta Mohan Tripura (45) S/O Lt. Lebamoni Tripura resident of Wakhiram Roaja Para, PS Manikpur, Nakshatra Debbarma (38) S/O Lt. Bidhimihan Debbarma resident of Jagaibari, PS Bishramganj, Emang Debbarma (20) S/O Rajesh Debbarma resident of Jagya Kobra, PS – Champahowar, Gertajoy Tripura (23) S/O Wakhi Mohan Tripura of Kalabari, Wakhiram Roaja Para, PS Manikpur and Mansubar Tripura (25) S/o Narendra Tripura resident of Kalabari, Wakhiram Roaja Para, PS Manikpur.
The five were undergoing training in NLFT’s Silacherri camp in Bangladesh. They left the hideout and crossed the international border and surrendered before police, said police.
They joined the NLFT (BM) faction during the last one and a half years. Their detailed interrogation will help security forces gather more information about the organization’s activities. Their surrender will also motivate other Cadres to surrender before security forces and join the mainstream society, leaving the path of violence behind, an official statement said.
Notably, the NLFT was established in 1989 with the primary objective of achieving a sovereign Tripura. In 1997, the organization was banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA).
