Heavy rains due to cyclone Midhili have damaged paddy in Tripura, said farmers. Farmers in the Kanchannagar, Kanchanmala, Udaipur and Melaghar of Tripura on Saturday morning said that the rains had damaged the majority of their ripe paddy fields.
“Heavy rain has toppled the paddy to the ground,” said Ranjan Sarkar, a farmer of Kanchanmala area. “This is a significant loss for me.”
According to Nayan Das, a farmer of Melaghar, he suffered heavy losses as his almost-ripe paddy in two Kani land has been almost destroyed by the rough weather.
Rohan Das, another farmer, said sudden heavy rainfall has made paddy harvesting more expensive.
Due to the cyclonic storm, it rained all day on Friday in Tripura. Farmers have incurred a great deal of loss. It has become more challenging for farmers to gather ripe paddy from the fields.
It is to be mentioned here that Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha on Friday night on his social media handle wrote that, due to this natural calamity, the farmers who have lost their crops will be compensated according to the rules of the state government.
The state agriculture and farmers’ welfare minister Ratan Lal Nath has also directed the officials of the department to extend their hand of cooperation to the affected farmers.
