Cyclone ‘Remal’: Tripura power sector incurred over Rs 2 crore says Minister Ratan Lal Nath
Cyclone ‘Remal’ has taken a toll on the electricity supply across the state since Monday night following a heavy shower accompanied by a high-speed storm that resulted in disruption of power supply in multiple areas of the state including the capital town of Agartala.
Despite efforts by Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) to restore power on a war footing, service had not been restored in many areas, including Agartala, by Tuesday afternoon.
Addressing a press conference here in the conference hall of the civil secretariat on Tuesday, the state power minister Ratan Lal Nath said that as per the preliminary estimate, the cyclone ‘Remal’ had incurred a loss of around Rs 2.50 crore to the state power sector.
“686 electric poles were left damaged in the entire state, including Agartala, power lines stretching at least 234 kms were torn and 82 transformers were damaged due to the impact of Cyclone Remal,” he told reporters, adding that 3 to 4 teams have been formed in each subdivision with the aim of speedily normalizing the electricity service in the state. Each team consists of 4-5 members of the contracting company including electricians. They continued to work in wartime conditions, he said.
He however expressed his hope that 80 percent of electrification work in Agartala division and the rest of the work in the subdivisions will be completed by Tuesday night.
Managing Director of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) Debashish Sarkar and General Manager Swapan Debbarma were also present at the press conference.
