Along with the rest of the nation, Tripura also celebrated the Raksha Bandhan festival on Wednesday. Raksha Bandhan, meaning the bond of protection, is a festival to celebrate the relationship between brothers, cousins and sisters. At this festival, a sister ties a sacred thread on her brother’s wrist, which symbolizes the sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well-being, and the brother’s lifelong vow to protect her.
All generations of Tripura people celebrated Raksha Bandhan or Gamha Purnima or Rakhi with much fervour across the state. The festival celebrates the bond of love between brothers and sisters. To mark the festival, brothers and sisters in every household of the state start preparations very early in the morning. While girls prepare the ‘puja thali’ filled with colourful ‘rakhis’ along with chandan-tilak, sindoor (vermilion), akshat (rice), lamps and sweets, boys are well prepared with gifts for their beloved sisters. After performing ‘aarti’ for the wellbeing of their brothers, girls put tilak on their forehead and tie rakhi threads on their wrists. The brothers in return offer gifts to their sisters as a token of love and vow to protect them.
It is a festival that tugs at the hearts of brothers and sisters alike. No matter where they are, how far apart, but on Raksha Bandhan day sisters and brothers celebrate their love for each other and the bond keeps getting stronger over the years.
