Keeping eyes on the upcoming traditional festival of which has been scheduled to begin on June 20, Agartala Jaganath Temple is undergoing full-fledged preparation. The preparation includes painting of the statues, cleaning of the temple premises and decoration of the chariot.
The significance of the Rath Yatra is immense for a person, who longs for spiritual merit and final liberation. It is believed that anyone who pulls the rope linked to the chariots of the deities and helps others also in doing so or merely touches the rope or chariots, gets the merit of several penances.
Documented in Hindu sacred texts – Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, Skanda Purana and Kapila Samhita – it is believed that Subhadra, sister of Lord Jagannath, desired to travel to Puri. To fulfil her wish, Lord Jagannath, along with his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, left for Puri in a chariot with Devi Subhadra.
Since then, this festival marks the annual ceremonial journey of Lord Jagannath, brother Balabhadra and younger sister Subhadra, from their home temple to another temple which is considered to be their aunt’s home.

TripuraheraldTripura minister for transport Sushanta Chowdhury on Friday written to the Minister of Railways Ashiwini Vishnaw and demanded to increase the number of coaches from 8/9 to 15 or 22 in all 5 (five) DEMU passenger trains presently running in the state of Tripura for the benefit of the peoples of Tripura.
In his letter Tripura minister for transport Sushanta Chowdhury stated presently 3 (three) DEMU passenger trains are running from Agartala to Sabroom and vice-versa with 8 (eight) coaches and 2 (two) numbers of DEMU passenger trains are running from Agartala to Dharmanagar and viceversa with 9 (nine) coaches. These DEMU trains, with limited number of coaches, are not sufficient to cater the increasing number of passengers and clear the extra rush that causing great hardship to the daily commuters.
There is a tremendous demand from every nooks and corner of the state for increasing number of coaches in all the DEMU passenger trains running from Agartala to Sabroom and Agartala to Dharmanagar in order to remove the inconvenience faced by the passengers. Always there is overcrowding and rush of commuters in all the DEMU passenger trains creating a lot of chaos. In such a situation, the possibilities of any untoward incident cannot be ruled out. The matter has come up during the last assembly session also and many organisations have taken out agitational programmes demanding for increasing number of coaches in DEMU passenger trains.

TripuraheraldChief Minister of Tripura Dr. Manik Saha on Monday appealed to people of the state not to use plastic bags to help protect the environment and suggested that they carry cloth bags, which are long-lasting, for shopping.
He was addressing in a programme organized by Maharaj Ganja Bazar committee on the occasion of World Environment Day 2023. The need of the hour is to shun the usage of plastic and adopt alternative solutions, he added.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha shared that though we are aware of the ill effects of single use plastics but we are not being able to do enough to avoid their ill effects. Single-use plastics are typically items that are discarded after being used only once and do not go through the recycling process. Heavy usage of plastics across the world has caused quite a lot of menace, governments and various global regulatory bodies are trying hard to arrest it, he added.
This plastic pollution is not only harming marine life but also entering our food chain and our bloodstream posing a significant threat to human health. Conventional plastics break down into micro and nano plastics quickly which stay in our biological cycles for thousands of years. They often end up in landfills or are leaked in the environment, finding their way into the oceans, he mentioned.
This day helps raise awareness about environmental problems and how we can take steps to tackle them. People should know about the environmental issues that are going to be a big threat in the near future. It is important to take action immediately to avoid major problems later on. We should learn to take care of our environment. World Environment Day helps us know more about the changes we can implement. This year the theme pertains to ‘solutions to plastic pollution’, he said.
